GENERAL INFORMATION

1. How many people are expected to attend the Congress?

More than 3,000 participants are expected to attend, including several hundred delegates and exhibitors.

2. Who should attend?

Scientists, researchers and engineers are welcome, as well as anyone active in the space community such as Astronauts and space industry experts, agency officials, academia and students, policy-makers and government officials, industry media and the general public.

3. Why Attend?

The International Astronautical Congress has become known as the world’s best global space congress. Through shared best practices and research, networking, training, hands-on opportunities and an expansive exhibit hall, participants will have a chance to network, attend sessions and find information and products that have proven beneficial to the industry.
 

Participants will have numerous and unique opportunities to learn, first-hand, from experts in the field, and see the latest products and strategies to best meet their specific needs. Attendees can take advantage of an international collaborative platform and share knowledge on the latest innovations and projects in the space and astronautics industries. Presenters are approachable; exhibitors are knowledgeable with interactive presentations.

 

IAC 2014 will provide an excellent opportunity for participants from around the world to network and present their latest accomplishments and future plans, identify opportunities for collaboration, and share their opinions on an array of space related topics.

9. What languages will be used during the Congress?

The official language of the Congress is English; however there will be some translators available to assist with other international languages. 

10. What type of weather can we expect?

September Weather in Toronto
 

  • Average September temperature: 15.6ºC / 60ºF

  • September average high: 20.6ºC / 69ºF

  • September average low: 9ºC / 48ºF

  • Visitors can expect rain about 5 out of 30 days in September.

 

What to Pack for Toronto in September

 

Visitors to Toronto in September should be prepared for a variety of temperatures. Pack clothing that can be layered. Summer and fall clothing are fine, but be sure to have a sweater or jacket on hand. 

11. Currency

Rates can change daily, to convert to and from Canadian dollars, use the latest exchange rates from the Bank of Canada. Try the Bank of Canada Currency Converter

12. Banks and ATM

  • Banks and ATM are available throughout Toronto, as well as in or near the Congress venue. Most banks will be able to transfer foreign currency and are open daily from Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with certain branches open later in the evening.

  • Currency exchange services are also available at airports, and some hotels. Most hotels and restaurants accept credit cards like Visa, Master Card and American Express.

13. Do I need a special health insurance?

We recommend that you contact your health insurance company and check to be sure that your coverage is acceptable in Canada.

TRANSPORTATION

14. Which Airports are close to Toronto?

Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport (YYZ) (commonly known as the Toronto Pearson International Airport, code YYZ) is the major airport serving the Toronto area and the busiest airport in Canada with over 25 million passengers passing through annually. Located in Mississauga, just outside of Toronto, the airport is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from downtown Toronto or 30 - 40 mins by car. 

 

The Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) (commonly known as the Toronto Island Airport, code YTZ) is conveniently located just offshore downtown Toronto, near Union Station and close to many major hotels and attractions. The only airline that serves the Toronto City Centre is Porter Airlines, a short-haul airline with destinations in northeast Canada and the U.S.

15. What type of ground transportation is available?

From either airport there are several transit options to get in and around the city. Listed below are a few of the different options and costs.

 

 

 

Getting from Toronto Pearson International Airport to Downtown

 

 

  • Public Transit: The Airport Rocket provides all-day, regular accessible express bus service.

  • Taxis: Taxis to hotels in downtown Toronto cost between Cdn$40 and Cdn$50, plus tip,    and take about 30 - 40 mins.

  • Limousines: Limousines to hotels in downtown Toronto cost between Cdn$45 and Cdn$55, plus tip, and take about 30 - 40 mins.

  • Airport Express Shuttle: The Airport Express takes about 40 minutes to reach downtown Toronto and costs about Cdn$23.95 one way (plus tip). The Airport Express Shuttle runs from the arrivals terminal at Pearson International Airport to some of the major downtown Toronto hotels.

  • Complimentary Airport Hotel Shuttle: Most hotels near Toronto Pearson International Airport offer free shuttle service to and from the airport. For transportation from the airport, just look for the shuttle pick-up area or call the hotel directly.

  • Rental Cars: Toronto Pearson International Airport has five rental car companies on-site. if you need to rent a car. Rental car agencies are located on Level 1 of the parking garage at each terminal.

  • Private Shuttle to and from Areas outside Toronto: Numerous transit companies offer either shared or private service to and from Toronto Pearson International Airport to and from locations outside the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), such as Niagara Falls, Oakville and Hamilton. For example, Airways Transit is a popular transit company that has locations at terminals 1 & 3 and offers shared transportation between locations outside the GTA and the airport. Cost varies depending on distance traveled but is generally cheaper than taxis.

   Five most common ways of getting downtown:

 

  • Airport Taxi & Minivans

  • Airport Limo

  • Pacific Western Airport Express bus

  • Toronto Transit Commission (public transit)

  • Rental Car

 

By Taxi - Follow signs to the taxi queue (ignore any drivers who may approach you inside the terminal); it's typically a very short wait.  Credit cards are generally accepted, debit cards not as often but it is best to check with the driver in advance.  Tips for the driver ranges from 10 to 20%.

 

Taxis and Limos are located at the ‘Arrivals Level’ of each terminal in the airport and can be found at the following locations:

For safety reasons visitors are advised not to hire drivers soliciting inside the terminals or asking guests to follow them to the parking garage or any other location.

 

By Train & Bus - Union Station, Toronto's main rail station, is one block from the MTCC, connected by the weather-protected Skywalk. The Bus Terminal is just five minutes away by cab, or ten minutes by public transit.

 

GO Transit operates bus and train service daily between Pearson International Airport and many GTA locations. The bus is located at Terminal 1 (Ground level).

 

This service operates every 60 minutes, from approximately 6:00 am to 1:00 am Monday to Saturday, and from approximately 9:00 am to 1:00 am on Sundays.

Car Rental - If you are driving from the airport, follow these directions:

 

  • Take Highway 427 South to the Gardiner Expressway

  • For the South Building, exit at York St.

  • Proceed north two lights to Bremner Blvd.

  • Turn left on Bremner Blvd.

  • Turn left on Lower Simcoe St. then turn right into the garage

ENTERING CANADA

Visa Application and Traveling to Canada

For important information about traveling to Canada and applying for visiting or business Visa’s please check the following links:

 

 

 

 

 

Please note that as of September 4, 2013 citizens from selected countries will be required to provide their biometrics information (fingerprints and photograph) when they apply for a visitor visa, study permit, or work permit. For more information on the biometrics requirement please click here

 

Participants who require a visa should be encouraged to apply for their visa as soon as their participation in the event is confirmed (keeping in mind the visa processing times for their country of residence ). 

 

Participants have a choice of submitting a visa application online (e-application), at a visa office or at a Visa Application Centre (VAC).


 

Submission of Applications:

Canada does not have a visa office in every country so it is important that participants visit the website of the visa office responsible for processing their visa application for information on how to submit an application for a TRV and the documentation required to support the application.  To view a list of visa offices and the countries they serve please click here. 

 


Visa Application Centres (VACs):

In some countries Citizenship and Immigration Canada has engaged the services of a private service provider to assist individuals applying for CIC services.
