IAC 2014 Theme

"Our World Needs Space"

The theme of IAC 2014 in Toronto is an exploration of the fundamental relationship between Earth and space and will focus on the ways that space activities help to satisfy requirements on Earth. The theme embodies the notion of a shared need and a shared future, and is brought to a personal and individual level with the use of ‘our’.

IAC 2014 will underscore the importance of promoting collaboration, knowledge-sharing, global partnerships and international innovations with the broader space community, the media and the public at large.

Our World Need Space invites questions - why? ...how? ... and the answers will be explored in the technical program, the Plenary Panels, Highlight Lectures, Late-Breaking News sessions ... and in thousands of conversations that will take place throughout the Congress.

The benefits of space activities have become woven into the fabric of our everyday lives. Satellites on orbit provide communications, earth observation and remote sensing data, communications and disaster management capabilities, territorial surveillance ... and so much more. Read about some of these benefits in our blog.

The Canadian space sector is relatively small compared with that of other spacefaring nations. Still, Canada's space industry over the years has a well-earned reputation for 'punching well above its weight' and has developed world-leading expertise in areas such as communications and Earth observation satellites, space robotics, space medicine, tele-medicine and tele-education, and superb space hardware including satellite components and advanced composite materials.

Of equal importance to the Congress theme, is to raise humanity’s awareness of water-related issues. Our world’s most valuable resource is water and without it we could not exist. Better management of this resource has become a very important social and humanitarian mission of Guy Laliberté, the founder of Cirque du Soleil and Canada’s first private explorer in space.

Out of concerns for protecting and sharing this precious resource, Laliberté launched the One Drop Foundation, a charitable organization that supports sustainable efforts in universal access to water across the globe. ONE DROP Canada is also involved in fundraising and in the fight against poverty.
